Corfu The Queen

Corfu, Queen of the Ionian Sea is the westernmost part of Greece. One of the Ionian islands, known worldwide as a tourist resort, undoubtedly natural, historic and cultural wealth.

Corfu was not always an island. Originally a promontory of Epirus, which was cut off during the Paleolithic era, start of continuous settlers. In ancient times was known by the names Korkyara, Arpi, and Scheria Drepani. Today the foreigners know it as Corfu, name derived from the two points that stand out in today's Old Fort.

Moreover, the island identified with the island of Corfu, has a prominent place in the Homeric epics with their petitions in the reign of Alkinoos and assistance offered to Odysseus return to Ithaca.

Corfu has many interesting archaeological, historical and religious sites, which make it an ideal destination for lovers of tours. Here you mention a few from the most important attractions of Corfu.

Archaeological Site of Paleopolis

The site of Paleopolis located near Mon Repos. Paleopoli was the old market of Corfu. The most important monuments of the area is the market, the Doric temple of Kardaki, Roman baths and pre-curved Hellenistic era building. In the area there is also a museum which presents the findings of the excavations.

The Memorial Menekratis


The monument is located in Menekratis Garitsa. Constructed in the 6th century BC and was discovered in 1843. The most impressive part of the monument is inscribed archaic verse 10, which is considered one of the oldest inscriptions in Greece.

The Ruins of Roman Baths in Acharavi

Thought to be only one part of a complex of Roman buildings.
Discovered in 1985.

The Temple of Artemis Gorgon

Here visitors can see the well-preserved Doric temple and the big altar. Constructed in the 6th century BC and was discovered in 1822.

Aggelokastro

Aggelokastro located near the fountain and built in the 13th century AD. Admission is curved, while inside the castle ruins of rooms and warehouses. It also has the church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and St. Sunday, which is built in a cave.

The Old Fort

The Old Fort on the east side of the port of Corfu. Built during the era of the Byzantine Empire, and strengthened first by the Venetians and later by the British. It had a moat and drawbridge, which have replaced an iron bridge that connects the fortress to the city.


New Castle

The construction of the new fortress began in 1576 and completed in 1645. The fort is situated on a hill above the old port and is considered a masterpiece of fortress architecture.

Achillion

The Achillion Palace was built from 1889 to 1891 as the residence of Princess Elisabeth von Vitelsmpach (also known as Princess Sissy). The Achilles name from the mythical hero Achilles.

The Princess Sissi was fascinated by Greek mythology, which is evident from the decoration of the palace, which is full of statues of the Olympian gods and muses nine, including two impressive statues of Achilles in the garden and the stairs.

In the courtyard are beautiful statues of ancient Greek writers and orators. Inside the palace, the furniture is carved and bearing mythological figures.

After the murder of Princess Sissi, the palace was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II, who used it as a summer residence until the start of World War II.

Mouse

A green rock in the middle of the sea, is the trademark of Corfu. The legendary Mouse, the entrance to the lagoon Halikiopoulou are among the attractions while you admire, but forbidden to touch.

Mouse can be reached only summer, by boat or by boat from the cosmopolitan Cannon, from where also the view that provides the green island is breathtaking, from the isle of Vlahernas, home to the monastery and from the Perama.

The Mouse, the most photographed attraction in Corfu, he named his tiny size. However, the miniature size of the reserve has an excellent location in the myth.

In Odyssey we learn that Corfu, was the last stop on the long-suffering journey back to Ithaca of Odysseus. According to legend, then the Mouse was actually the ship of Ulysses, which during the storm god Poseidon turned to the green rock that we all know.

Cannon

Place breathtakingly beautiful, but also the most famous sights of Corfu, is the cosmopolitan Cannon. Located on the peninsula, home to beautiful beaches and beaches in the south of Corfu town.

The Cannon offer a magnificent view over the island with the monastery Vlahernas with which binds to an elevated strip of land, while in the background is dominated by the legendary green rock, the Mouse.

Any time of day you get to cannon is very beautiful view. The colors, the bright blue, sea blue, emerald green are an oasis for the eyes and senses. However, the most beautiful time to visit is the time when the sun sinks in the deep blue sea and the sky orange and purple reflection highlights.
